Help Diego Continue Changing Lives at Our School
At Kempton Street Literacy Academy, a preschool through fifth grade elementary school in Spring Valley, California, 93% of our students come from socio-economically disadvantaged homes. Many of our children face challenges beyond the classroom—economic hardship, housing instability, trauma, and stress that can make it difficult to simply show up, feel safe, and be ready to learn.
That’s where Diego comes in.
Diego is not just a dog—he is a highly trained therapeutic facility dog and a vital member of our school community. Each day, Diego walks through our campus bringing comfort, calm, joy, and connection to students who need it most.
For some of our students, school can feel overwhelming. Anxiety, behavioral challenges, or difficult home situations can make attendance inconsistent. But when students know Diego will be there—waiting with a wagging tail and unconditional love—they come to school.
Diego gives students a reason to show up.
He greets students at the gate, alongside Principal Josa, supports our Cougar Cubs during emotional moments, and helps de-escalate crises before they grow. Students who struggle to regulate their emotions are able to sit beside Diego, take a breath, and reset. For many, he is a safe presence when words are hard to find.
Diego supports learning and emotional growth.
He listens patiently as students practice reading aloud, helping build confidence without fear of judgment. He joins counseling sessions, providing comfort during difficult conversations. He helps students develop empathy, responsibility, and trust—skills that extend far beyond the classroom. He exemplifies our Cougar Code, or Promesa Puma.
Diego lifts our entire school community.
Our staff also benefit from Diego’s presence. Educators working tirelessly to support high-need students find moments of calm and joy with him during long, demanding days. Diego helps us all breathe and get through tough days a little easier.
