Hi! My name is Diana Valero, I'm a Venezuelan composer, sound designer and pianist, and I am currently applying for an O1B (arts) visa in order to stay in the US and continue working. This is a very expensive process, and even though I have been able to cover most of the legal fees, I still need to pay for the USCIS filing fee and the Express Processing fee since I have until September of this year to switch my immigration status.

Here is a little bit about me and my journey:

I started playing piano at 7 years old and have been studying music theory, jazz, and composition ever since. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to pursue a career in the music industry but due to the political and economic situation of my country, I also knew that in order to fulfill that goal, and for my own safety, I had to leave the country as soon as I got the chance.

In 2020, I was one of 3 recipients of the Latin Grammy Foundation Scholarship, which covered my tuition, and one of 10 artists to receive the Adobe Creativity Scholarship which took care of my living expenses. These opportunities allowed me to come to the United States to study Music Theory and Composition at NYU Steinhardt, from where I graduated in May of 2024.

Since graduating, I have been working under OPT at Antfood, a music studio in Brooklyn that focuses on sonic branding and marketing, but as my OPT time expires and my student visa runs out, I need to change my immigration status before the first week of September of this year. My only option at this time is an O1B visa, which would allow me to continue to work in the US as an artist. I have been working with an attorney for over a year, building a compelling case to present to USCIS, gathering countless documents and evidence that show my trajectory and my contribution to the music scene in the United States.

This has been a very challenging process. I have spent close to $10,000 in legal fees and have $4,000 dollars to go. I work full time as a composer, and took a second job babysitting at nights in order to save money. My parents are still living in Venezuela and it is simply impossible for them to help me financially due to the severity of the economic situation. Because I work in a creative field, my company is unable to sponsor my visa, and even though they have supported me with a portion of the legal fees, I still have to cover the remainder. I have exhausted all of my resources and I still need to pay for the USCIS filing fee and the express processing fee since I have less than a month to switch my immigration status.

Going back to Venezuela is not an option, and If I were to leave the country I would not be able to come back because as of May of this year, Venezuela is part of the US travel ban. I have built a life for myself in this country and all I want is to continue to work as a musician to sustain myself and make my family proud. For these reasons, I am reaching out to my community for support during this time. No donation is too small and anything helps put me closer to my goal.

Estas oportunidades me permitieron venir a Estados Unidos a estudiar Teoría Musical y Composición en NYU Steinhardt, donde me gradué en mayo de 2024.
