My Sister’s Fight: A Story of Strength and Hope
This is my sister, Dene’t (pronounced Denea), and this is her incredible story.
In February 2018, she was diagnosed with Stage 3B Inflammatory Breast Cancer—a rare and aggressive form of cancer. She faced it head-on with 16 rounds of the strongest chemo, a double mastectomy, lymph node removal, and 22 rounds of radiation. Her doctors were confident she had beaten it.
But in August 2022, life dealt her another blow—Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer. This time, it had spread to her liver, lung, bones, and parotid gland. Because her cancer is triple-negative and PD-L1 negative, many of the newer treatments aren’t an option for her. Yet, she fights on with everything she has.
Here’s the part that truly amazes me—she has already outlived every prognosis. Most people diagnosed with this form of cancer don’t make it past six months to 2.5 years. But my sister? She has been fighting bravely for over six years, a true warrior who has defied all odds. As of March 4, 2025, Dene’t has stopped treatment due to the progression of brain lesions, leaving no remaining options. She has now been placed on hospice care. Her health has declined, and we are doing everything we can to keep her as comfortable and pain-free as possible. Family has been called in as we cherish every moment with her, uncertain of how much time we have left together.
I’m sharing Denet's story today to raise awareness for this rare form of cancer and to ask for support for her and her husband. He is a disabled veteran, and together they live on a very fixed income. Between medical bills, insurance premiums, the cost of daily life, and fulfilling Denet's wishes after she passes, the financial burden can be overwhelming.
I’m not asking for pity, nor am I asking anyone to give more than they can. But if you are able, please consider donating—no amount is too small. Every donation is deeply appreciated, more than words can express.
