Back in November my sister went  into total shunt failer due to menengitis infection and had to undergo 6 brain surgeries back to back within a couple days from each other. Today, she’s back in Harborview with the new that she’ll have a 7th brain surgery due to yet another infection.
Almost 6 months later from her shunt issues she got the news she’ll have to undergo spinal cord tailbone pelvic surgery due to the aftermath of this infection.
Due to it not having no where to drain the infection caused a Limpoma on her butt making get a severe tethered cord.
At this time she already has Spina-bifida so tethered cord and an infection has added complications.
She has complete loss of bladder control and will have to under go a complete bladder reconstruction surgery as well to get her bladder working again.
Here is a brief description of what she currently has;

  • Lipomyelomeningocele;
It's a congenital condition where a fatty tissue (Lipoma) is connected to the spinal cord and meninges, often through a defect in the vertebral column.
  • Tethered Cord Syndrome:
The lipoma can tether the spinal cord, leading to neurological problems like weakness, numbness, and difficulty with bowel and bladder control.
Surgical intervention may be necessary to release the tethered cord and address other issues.
Early intervention can improve outcomes.
Surgery she’ll need is a Spinal shortening procedures, like Spine-Shortening Vertebral Osteotomy (SSVO); a surgical intervention to alleviate tension on the spinal cord by shortening the vertebrae

    -  Purpose:
Spinal Shortening is a surgical technique that aims to reduce traction on the spinal cord by intentionally shortening the length of the spinal column.

It's considered an alternative to traditional detethering procedures, especially in cases of recurrent or Complex Tethered Cord Syndrome, where detethering can lead to high rates of retethering and other complications.

That’s why it’s so important she goes through these surgeries to better her quality of life now that it’s detected on time and theres doctors willing to help her.
