Hello,
I am a concerned resident and community organizer. This summer, I became aware that a large monument of Christopher Columbus is located in Bloomfield NJ's Historic Town Green. Since then, I created a grassroots effort called "Decolonize Your Town." This call to action demands the removal of this monument, which is known to many as a symbol of colonialism, slavery, and genocide. The protest will challenge the myths and raise awareness of contemporaries who condemned Columbus' actions. I'm inviting residents to confront the significance of this historical figure while reckoning what it means to keep such monuments in place for future generations. It also encourages Italian Americans to consider celebrating alternatives icons of Italy's rich culture.
This peaceful protest will take place annually on the second Monday of October and will call for the monument's removal as long as it remains installed.
Putting together this event as envisioned will come at a personal cost and so I seek community support to ease the anticipated financial burden that has the potential to help heal generational trauma and bring out the best of Bloomfield.
Donations will directly support the logistical needs of this event to ensure it is educational, peaceful, and impactful. The funds will cover essential items such as:
Marketing materials (signs, banners, etc)
Visual displays
Handouts
Book distributions
Sound equipment
Light refreshments for attendees
Contributing to this fundraiser supports the community's call for justice, equity, and historical truth. Every dollar helps amplify the message and invites a healthy exchange among our diverse community.
Please donate what you can, and share this campaign with your network to spread the word. Thank you!
