NIT Durgapur Alumni Association of North America (NITD AA NA) is fundraising for SMA Type 2 patient Debosmita, daughter of Debashish Ghosh (Graduate of RECD/NITD 1996 Batch).

Debosmita is a bright, academically gifted 12-year-old suffering from a rare and debilitating neuromuscular disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 2, which seriously threatens her life.

Gross hypotonia has weakened her muscles and dislocated her hips. She finds breathing hard and needs BiPap (non-invasive ventilator) support at night. With more than 80% locomotor disability, she needs constant care for her day-to-day needs. A year ago, she had major spine surgery to correct scoliosis – the abnormal curvature and twisting of the spine.

Donors like you opened their hearts and supported Debosmita during the surgery, and we are eternally grateful for allowing Debosmita to take a small step forward in regaining her childhood.

We are now trying to raise USD 1.27 Million (INR 10 Crores) for longer-term treatment. The only drug that is approved for her condition in India is Evrysdi (Risdipalm)

The drug Risdipalm by Roche is a continuous treatment that improves the quality of life and stops disease progression. This drug costs USD 90K (INR 72 Lakhs) annually. Through a compassionate use program, Roche has provided her with this drug, however this support will end soon. Stopping this medication will put at risk the progress she has made and shorten her life.

We are trying to raise funds to continue treating Debosmita with Risdipalm. Your contribution will help save her life. The goal amount of the campaign may be higher than the attached estimates to address and aid the post-hospitalization expenses/contingencies, including but not limited to prolonged medication, diagnostics, rehabilitation therapies, and follow-up doctor visits/consultations, which vary from disease to disease.
