Dear Mama: Empowering Black Maternal Health is a celebratory and informative event during Black Maternal Health week, April 11th-17th. The goal is to create a joyous atmosphere while providing essential information on birthing locations, doula services, lactation services, warning signs and postpartum care. This celebration will be composed of information sessions including Q&A, performances, an art display and giveaways, food and wellness and resource vendors. Entry into the event is free so that everyone has access to this information and resources.

Kansas artist; Aisha Imani Sanaa organized this event inspired by the passing of Brenisha Wilkinson, her closest cousin and friend. Due to postpartum complications, she passed away two months after giving birth to her daughter. It is our hope that by providing essential postpartum warning signs to Black women and their families, a life could potentially be saved in Brenisha's honor.

To cultivate a collective effort and ensure Dear Mama is a success, we have exceptional Black-led organizations as collaborators, which include Uzazi Village, Ruby Jean’s Juicery, KCBlackowned and The Royal Chief. These organizations are committed to uplifting the Kansas City community through various initiatives.
