Watch the Auslan Translation here:
Every Deaf child deserves access to education. It’s a human right.
Yet in Australia today, too many Deaf children go to school without a credentialed Auslan interpreter. Imagine sitting in class where the teacher speaks a language you cannot hear. You fall behind, struggle to make friends, and miss out on learning. This is daily life for many Deaf students who rely on Auslan but are denied equal opportunities to learn and thrive.
And it’s not just children. Deaf adults across Australia also miss out, in hospitals, at work, in legal and financial meetings, and at university, because of a critical shortage of interpreters. With only about 300 full-time interpreters for over 16,000 Deaf Auslan users, demand far outweighs supply.
Many interpreters leave the profession early due to burnout, injury, low pay, lack of support and a general lack of understanding in the community about the role of an interpreter. Up to 70% leave before retirement, worsening the shortage.
At AIMS (Allied Interpreter Mentorship and Support), we are working to change this.
We’re raising funds to provide interpreters with training, mentoring, and holistic support so they can stay in the profession long-term and continue giving Deaf children and adults the access they need.
So far in the last 5 months set have been able to deliver workshops on:
- Resilience for Interpreters
- Holding Space and Debriefing
- Kinesiology for Stress Relief
- Overcoming Interpreter Imposter Syndrome
- Interpreting Across Cultures
- Music Interpreting
4/6 were delivered by international guest speakers as Auslan Interpreters have said they desperately crave fresh outside perspectives and support to help them stay in the profession for the long term.
Some feedback we received from recent workshops:
“The best workshop I’ve ever been to”
“I feel a renewed sense of excitement for the profession”
”Inspirational”
”A 5 Star Workshop”
”Fun, friendly and learned so much”
In order for AIMS to keep organising workshops, training and support for interpreters, we need your support.
Please donate or share to help ensure every Deaf student has the right support in class and every Deaf adult has equal access in all areas of life.
