Support Deaf Children in Rwanda: Camp & School Year Aid

And we hope that after reading this, you’ll be part of the 1% who decides to donate and support the education of deaf children in a small rural school in Rwanda: Nyabihu School for the Deaf.

What’s Unforgotten and why are we doing this?

My name is Álvaro, and I’m the founder of Unforgotten. But truly, I’m just someone trying to connect people who care with those doing the real work on the ground—the teachers and staff of Nyabihu School for the Deaf.

This all began after I spent four months volunteering at the school. Since then, I’ve stayed in touch with the director, and we’ve had difficult conversations trying to resolve the uncertainties surrounding the future of the school.

Will the school be able to stay open next year?

Will we have to reduce the number of students again?

Will teachers leave because we can’t match public school salaries?

That’s when we realised we needed something more — a way to bring sustainability to the project in the long term. And that’s how Unforgotten started.

It’s not easy, but it’s the only way forward.

Where is your donation going?

We’ve set clear goals for the coming months, and every euro we raise has a purpose.

1. Summer Camp | Goal: 2.000 €

This August we’re running a 3-week Summer Camp at the school with 3 volunteers from Spain. The goal is to create a space of creativity and expression for the children, while also training the teachers to use new resources like the donated laptops and improve their classes. To make it happen, we need funds to cover transport for the students, materials for activities like the sewing workshop, and food and hygiene products during the camp.

2. School Year Support | Goal: 5.500 €

We’re also raising funds to improve the school for the next school year starting in September:

Right now, the school doesn’t have access to clean drinking water. The UV purification system is broken and needs to be repaired or replaced. Improving school meals is also one of our top priorities. Currently, students eat a very basic diet of rice, cabbage, and beans, which makes it difficult to meet their nutritional needs.

At the moment, there's only one book per subject and class. One of the first things the teachers asked me for was new books — so the children can follow the lessons and have better learning opportunities.

The school is up in the mountains, and during the rainy season, it gets very cold and wet. The students live at the school, but the facilities are not fully prepared for the heavy rain. We want to get them warm raincoats and boots so they can stay dry and comfortable throughout the term.

Primero de todo, gracias por ser parte del 20% que no ha pasado de largo este post. Estás aquí, leyendo esto, dándonos la oportunidad de contarte el proyecto que hay detrás de Unforgotten. Y esperamos que, después de leerlo, seas parte del 1% que decide donar y apoyar la educación de niños y niñas sordos en una pequeña escuela rural en Ruanda: Nyabihu School for the Deaf.

¿Qué es Unforgotten y por qué lo hacemos?

Me llamo Álvaro y soy el fundador de Unforgotten. Pero, sinceramente, solo soy alguien que intenta conectar a personas que quieren ayudar con quienes están haciendo el trabajo sobre el terreno: el equipo docente y el personal de la escuela Nyabihu.

Todo empezó después de pasar cuatro meses como voluntario en la escuela. Desde entonces he mantenido el contacto con el director, y hemos tenido conversaciones difíciles intentando resolver las incertidumbres que rodean el futuro de la escuela.

¿Podrá seguir abierta la escuela el próximo año?

¿Tendremos que reducir de nuevo el número de estudiantes?

¿Se marcharán los profesores porque no podemos pagar lo mismo que una escuela pública?

Y ahí entendimos que necesitábamos algo más—una forma de darle sostenibilidad al proyecto a largo plazo. Así nació Unforgotten.

Es un reto, pero es el único camino.

¿A dónde va tu donación?

Hemos establecido objetivos claros para los próximos meses, y cada euro que recaudemos tiene un propósito.

1. Campamento de Verano | Objetivo: 2.000 €

Este agosto organizamos un campamento de verano de 3 semanas en la escuela con 3 voluntarios de España. Queremos crear un espacio de creatividad y expresión para los niños, y también formar al profesorado en el uso de nuevos recursos como los portátiles donados. Para hacerlo posible, necesitamos cubrir el transporte de los alumnos, materiales para actividades como el taller de costura, y comida y productos de higiene durante el campamento.

2. Apoyo al curso escolar | Objetivo: 5.500 €

También buscamos apoyo para mejorar el día a día de la escuela durante el próximo curso que empieza en Septiembre:

Actualmente, la escuela no tiene acceso a agua potable. El sistema de purificación por UV está roto y necesita ser reparado o sustituido. Mejorar las comidas escolares también es una de nuestras principales prioridades. Actualmente, el alumnado sigue una dieta muy básica a base de arroz, col y judías, lo que dificulta cubrir sus necesidades nutricionales.

Ahora mismo hay solo un libro por clase y asignatura. Una de las primeras peticiones del profesorado fue conseguir más libros, para que los alumnos puedan seguir las clases y aprender en mejores condiciones.

La escuela está en una zona montañosa y durante la temporada de lluvias hace frío y llueve mucho. Los alumnos viven allí, pero las instalaciones no están totalmente preparadas para las fuertes lluvias. Queremos conseguir chubasqueros y botas para que estén secos y cómodos durante el trimestre.
