What is Unforgotten?

Unforgotten is a charity co-founded by Álvaro Sampedro and María Castrillo, created to support the education and wellbeing of deaf children in low-income contexts.

The project began after Álvaro spent several months volunteering at Nyabihu School for the Deaf in rural Rwanda. During that time, it became clear that the school wasn’t just lacking resources — it was facing long-term sustainability challenges.

Unforgotten was created to respond to those challenges with long-term collaboration, not one-off aid — working hand in hand with the school, listening first, and building sustainable support over time.

Where has your donation gone so far?

Summer Camp – A Shared Success

The Summer Camp was a powerful example of what collaboration can look like when it’s done right.

Unforgotten worked closely with Nyabihu School for the Deaf, alongside teachers and staff, to create a space where students could learn, express themselves, and enjoy their holidays, while teachers explored new ways of working with the resources available.

Thanks to your donations on GoFundMe, £1,665.83 was allocated to food for students and teachers during the 3 week camp, transport for students, a small compensation for teachers, cooks, and school staff who worked during their holidays and internet access to support activities.

Understanding the Bigger Picture

To make responsible decisions, we commissioned two additional reports from the school to better understand long-term challenges:

Over the past five years, only 14 out of 54 students (25.9%) passed the National Exam at the end of Primary 6. Passing this exam is a critical requirement for students to access secondary school, meaning that the majority of deaf students are currently unable to continue their education beyond primary level.

64% of graduates (60 out of 93) are currently unemployed or not studying.

These figures highlight systemic barriers that continue to limit educational and employment opportunities for deaf learners in Rwanda — and reinforce why long-term, structural support matters.

School Year Support – What’s next?

Books & Learning Materials

We already have a confirmed supplier and are ready to purchase 190 textbooks for students and teachers.

Total cost: £811

Until now, many classes have had only one book per subject, only for the teacher. These new books will allow children to follow lessons properly, study independently, and support teachers in delivering stronger, more structured classes.

This is one of the most immediate and tangible improvements we can make for this school year.

Clean Water

We are currently gathering technical information to assess the quality of the water supply reaching the school.

At the same time, we are seeking organisations or companies that can support or carry out a proper water quality analysis, which will allow us to take informed, sustainable action.

Warm & Waterproof Clothes

The school is located in a cold, mountainous area. During the rainy season, students face harsh conditions.

We are actively looking for local Rwandan suppliers who can provide durable, warm, and waterproof clothing in the quantities required — prioritising quality, sustainability, and local sourcing.

¿Qué es Unforgotten?

Unforgotten es una organización benéfica cofundada por Álvaro Sampedro y María Castrillo, creada para apoyar la educación y el bienestar de niños y niñas sordos en contextos de bajos recursos.

El proyecto comenzó después de que Álvaro pasara varios meses como voluntario en el Colegio de Sordos de Nyabihu, en una zona rural de Ruanda. Durante ese tiempo, quedó claro que el colegio no solo carecía de recursos, sino que se enfrentaba a retos de sostenibilidad a largo plazo.

Preguntas como:

Unforgotten nació para responder a estos retos mediante colaboración a largo plazo, no ayudas puntuales — trabajando mano a mano con el colegio, escuchando primero y construyendo un apoyo sostenible con el tiempo.

¿A dónde ha ido tu donación hasta ahora?

Campamento de Verano – Un éxito compartido

El Campamento de Verano fue un claro ejemplo de cómo puede ser la colaboración cuando se hace bien.

Unforgotten trabajó estrechamente con el Colegio de Sordos de Nyabihu, junto a profesores y personal del centro, para crear un espacio donde los estudiantes pudieran aprender, expresarse y disfrutar de sus vacaciones, mientras el profesorado con la ayuda de los voluntarios exploraba nuevas formas de trabajar con los recursos disponibles.

Gracias a vuestras donaciones en GoFundMe, se destinaron £1.665,83 a la alimentación de estudiantes y profesores durante el campamento de 3 semanas, transporte de los estudiantes, una pequeña compensación para profesores, cocineros y personal del colegio que trabajaron durante sus vacaciones y acceso a internet para apoyar las actividades.

Entendiendo el contexto general

Para tomar decisiones responsables, encargamos dos informes adicionales al colegio con el fin de comprender mejor los retos a largo plazo:

En los últimos cinco años, solo 14 de 54 estudiantes (25,9%) aprobaron el Examen Nacional al finalizar 6º de Primaria. Superar este examen es un requisito fundamental para poder continuar a educación secundaria, lo que significa que la mayoría de los estudiantes sordos no puede seguir estudiando más allá de la etapa de primaria.

El 64% de los graduados (60 de 93) se encuentra actualmente sin empleo o sin continuar sus estudios.

Estas cifras reflejan barreras sistémicas que siguen limitando las oportunidades educativas y laborales de los estudiantes sordos en Ruanda, y refuerzan la importancia de un apoyo estructural y a largo plazo.

Apoyo para el curso escolar – ¿Qué viene ahora?

Libros y materiales educativos

Ya contamos con un proveedor confirmado y estamos listos para comprar 190 libros de texto para estudiantes y profesores.

Coste total: £811

Hasta ahora, muchas clases contaban con un único libro por asignatura, utilizado solo por el profesor. Estos nuevos libros permitirán que los estudiantes sigan las clases correctamente, estudien de forma autónoma y que los profesores impartan clases más sólidas y estructuradas.

Esta es una de las mejoras más inmediatas y tangibles que podemos hacer durante este curso escolar.

Agua potable

Actualmente estamos recopilando información técnica para analizar la calidad del agua que llega al colegio.

Al mismo tiempo, estamos buscando organizaciones o empresas que puedan apoyar o llevar a cabo un análisis completo del agua, lo que nos permitirá tomar las correspondientes decisiones sostenibles.

Ropa de abrigo e impermeable

El colegio se encuentra en una zona montañosa y fría. Durante la temporada de lluvias, los estudiantes se enfrentan a condiciones especialmente duras.

Estamos buscando activamente proveedores locales en Ruanda que puedan ofrecer ropa duradera, cálida e impermeable en las cantidades necesarias, priorizando la calidad, la sostenibilidad y la compra local.
