The purpose of this fund raiser is to hire an independent auditor to examine how the City of Davis, California, has used its public tax money for the homeless for the past 10 years. My name is Dean Johansson. I am a 30-year resident of Davis. My only son grew up in Davis, graduated from Davis High School, subsequently became homeless in Davis, and eventually died homeless a year ago. Andrew was 33.
I recently helped start a homeless-led task force in Davis - Housing4allDavis. This project is an adjunct to the good work being performed by this task force.
From what I have seen there has been a large misappropriation of public funds meant for homeless programs. I would love to be proved wrong. My suspicion is that the culprit is what has been referred to as the “poverty industrial complex” where the money gets absorbed by middle management bureaucrats and never makes it to the target population. But again, the city’s finances are so opaque that it could be the result of graft and corruption. To this end I am starting this go-fund-me account. I am retired and get a small pension check and a social security check each month. I am personally pledging $100 from each check ($200 a month) to this fundraiser and intent to be completely transparent regarding the findings.
