My name is Damian Artiga, and I am currently a life scout working on my Eagle Scout Project. My project is to revamp and improve the community room in the Mosaic Gardens in Huntington Park.
The Mosaic Gardens at Huntington Park is a renovated former motel on Middleton Street that now provides stable, affordable housing for low-income families and transition-age youth, ages 18–24, many of whom are exiting the foster care system and are at high risk of homelessness. These young adults, often with children ranging from 5-10, previously lived in unstable conditions and now have private apartments with access to supportive programs from both Linc Housing and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health.
Right now, the Community Room is very dull and empty, with little going on. It's a place where kids from ages 5–10 can gather and do activities such as reading, crafts, and homework.
I plan to build and install 2 bookshelves to create an inviting reading space that encourages learning and connection among visitors. In addition, I will assemble and place a new dining set from a furniture store to provide a comfortable area for shared meals, meetings, or social gatherings.
To complete the transformation, we will repaint the room with a light green color that will brighten the space and promote a warm atmosphere. I will be constructing the bookshelves using wood, repainting the room, and adding a dining set for a bigger seating area for the kids.
I will need to purchase materials such as lumber, paint, and painting supplies (rollers, brushes, drop cloths). In addition, I am seeking donations of gently used or new children’s books, craft supplies, board games, educational posters, and decorative items (such as rugs or bean bags) to help make the room feel cozy and fun. These improvements will help create a more engaging and inviting environment for community members to gather, relax, and connect. It will be a great help if you can donate to my project. Thank you and yours in scouting, Damian Artiga.
