Support Cody Adams' Heart Surgery Recovery

Donation protected
Cody Adams was born with pulmonary atresia with a large VSD. This means pretty much is whole life he will be having open heart every 2-3 years to help repair his heart, depending on his growth. May 12th 2025 was a big day for this little guy as it was his FIRST OPEN HEART SURGERY. His surgery turned out to be way more complex and advanced than what they had originally thought. Cody’s heart had different anatomy than what they had seen via images and etc. The surgeon honestly almost just closed up due to the complexity and having an unknown TGA anatomy of the heart. Making placement of a conduit very difficult, actually rarely ever done with the type of diagnosis Cody has. He actually talked with the team and they decided to still try. His pulmonary arteries were very small, smaller than what they had thought. So small he was only able to patch part versus the whole artery. His VSD was a lot deeper and even bigger than expected almost splitting both chambers of the heart, took 14 sutures to close it partly, they left some of it open due to help with proper shunting because of how large it was. Due to the major hole in his heart, there was a potential of needing a pacemaker and sometimes needing one because of the changes in the heart after a major repair like that. But was nothing set in regarding a pacemaker.

His repair was successful! His heart looked great, function was appropriate and normal! The surgeon truly did an amazing job.

Cody was doing amazing doctors and was originally on a pacemaker and was brought off it the next day, and was even considered being taken to the step down unit ( to prepare to go home soon) the day after surgery.

Unfortunately things took a turn. Cody begun to get a little frustrated and doctors believe he had acid reflux, aspirated, and triggered a pulmonary hypertension event. Cody went into cardiac arrest. Surgeon opened him up at bedside and seen repair remained the same and looked great. However he did not have much cardiac output, kept getting weak so they placed him on ECMO and a ventilator to allow his heart to rest. Some of his other organs have taken a toll in repsonse to CPR and the arrest.

They are planning on weening him off some of the support tomorrow, and if that goes well they plan to try and take him off it completely Friday. But plans change and are completely up to Cody.

Unfortunately no one seen this coming, everyone even his care team is in shock because of how well he was doing and how great the heart function was and the repair. A cardiac arrest was a 5% risk post surgery. Pulmonary hypertension wasn’t on the radar at all. But there’s a reason for everything.

I just want to ask for prayers for him. I ask for prayers of healing, comfort, and strength. I pray for knowledge and ability for his care team, and his family as it has been a very hard thing to witness and go through. We know Cody is a fighter and that God is not done with his story yet.

So please pray for this sweet little baby boy

With that being said if you feel lead to give to help Rebecca and Micheal with upcoming medical bills, gas, food & etc please do. Most importantly our family just appreciates the on going prayers for this sweet boy.
