Supporting Christian Avelar’s Long Road to Recovery
Dear friends, family, and compassionate supporters,
My name is Felissa Pinedo, and I’m reaching out as a grandmother filled with deep love and hope for my grandson, Christian Avelar.
Christian is 27 years old, and despite the many challenges life has thrown at him, he has always shown strength, resilience, and heart. He was born with a pancreatic birth defect that led to early-onset diabetes, and at the age of 22, he underwent a pancreatic transplant—a major surgery that gave him a second chance at life. He also lives with advanced autism and epilepsy, and his day-to-day life requires consistent care and support.
Tragically, Christian was recently involved in a life-altering accident related to his autism disorder. He jumped 40 feet off a bridge due to an autism-related panic, resulting in severe and complex injuries. He suffered:
-A broken femur
-11 broken ribs
-Spinal trauma requiring surgical repair
-A fractured pelvis
-Fractures in both of feet
-And a ruptured gallbladder
Since the accident, Christian has been in the Intensive Care Unit receiving specialized treatment and advanced respiratory support requiring a ventilator. He has undergone seven major operations during his hospitalization and is now facing a long and difficult recovery. For the unseeable future, Christian will be wheelchair-bound due to his injuries.
His mother, Elizabeth Avelar, is his full-time caregiver and his fiercest advocate. She has cared for Christian through every step of his heart-breaking journey—from managing his diabetes and epilepsy, to supporting him through his transplant, and now this devastating accident. The emotional, physical, and financial toll has been unimaginable.
Elizabeth is now facing extensive medical expenses, and on top of that, she does not have a reliable vehicle to safely transport Christian to the many critical medical and therapy appointments he needs to recover. Her car is on the verge of breaking down and has no air conditioning, making travel uncomfortable and unsafe—especially given Christian’s medical fragility.
We are asking for help to provide Christian and Elizabeth with:
-A safe, reliable, and ideally wheelchair-accessible vehicle
-Assistance with ongoing medical costs and therapy
-Support for caregiving needs and home modifications
-Prayers and positive messages
Christian has survived against all odds. His fight is far from over—but with support, he has a chance at a better quality of life, continued healing, and the beautiful life he deserves.
If you can, please consider donating to this heartfelt cause. Any amount—big or small—will make a difference. And if you’re unable to contribute financially, we ask that you please share Christian’s story with your network.
Your kindness, generosity, and prayers mean the world to our family. Thank you for standing with Christian and Elizabeth on this long road to recovery.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Felissa Pinedo & Family
