Chris Harris and I met close to 15 years ago through a mutual love of Liberty, Missouri history. Throughout this time, he has been a cherished friend and an invaluable resource to our community. Some may recognize his name through the very popular, “I Remember When. . . Liberty, Missouri" Facebook group (5.3k members) and the page “The History of Liberty, Missouri 1822 to Present" (2.3k members). Over the past 20 years, Chris has poured his life into the history of his hometown. He was born and raised in Liberty, graduating from Liberty Senior High School in 1990 and attended William Jewell College (the third generation of his family to do so). He has lived here for the better part of 53 years and his passion regarding the history of his hometown has led to his involvement in local organizations. He has served on the design team for Historic Downtown Liberty, Inc. where he was the historian and photographer for their events. He served on the board of the Friends of the Pharis Farm as historian and photographer. He volunteered at the Clay County Archives & Historical Library and since 2013, has been a regular speaker for the Clay County Museum & Historical Society. For the past 20 years he also has researched and led walking tours in the different historic districts of Liberty, Missouri. Due to his continued poor health, he has had to resign from all these organizations.
Recently, Chris was diagnosed with cataplexy, a condition that has made it impossible for him to drive. His other health issues have led to multiple hospitalizations and daily complications. With declining health, when you see him, he still maintains a positive attitude and offers a smile to everyone he meets. As if these health challenges weren't enough, he is in urgent need of new housing while he manages his health. I am reaching out to our community in hopes that we can come together to support Chris during this difficult time. The funds raised will go directly toward helping him secure housing, cover care expenses, and allow him to continue his important work as a historian and to stay in Liberty.
