Support Child Development in Lima, Peru

This May I will be volunteering in Lima, Peru towards developing the education and health care for children. I will be going with a group of Humber students and faculty who are driven to make a positive impact in the Lima community. We will be assisting teachers in working with primary school children to improve the quality of their education and literacy in Spanish and English by encouraging artistic expression and creating a positive and stimulating environment. We will also be supporting the community of Villa el Salvador in providing much-needed health care to vulnerable children and adults, including vision screening for children, oral health campaigns, and the promotion of hygiene in schools.

Donated funds will help me fulfill my goal in purchasing books and educational materials for the children, which I will be able to use with them and leave behind for them. It will also underwrite some other costs of the trip which go towards the local communities including our accommodation with a local family and cultural and learning activities: daily volunteer assignments, language lessons, program materials, discussions with local experts etc. 

Education and adequate health are fundamental rights for every Peruvian child but are lacking significantly because these communities are under resourced, understaffed, and underfunded. Being Canadian, we often take free access to education and healthcare for granted and it’s important for us to have a global awareness and to be connected to those that don’t have the same opportunities as we do. Every dollar goes to support these children in underdeveloped communities who don’t even realize their academic potential or what care could be available to them.
