Support Chapis: Lost All in Apartment Fire

Hello, we’re María Barriga and Miguel Hernández.

We work at Oxomoco, and we want to share some heartbreaking news about our dear coworker, Esau, known to all of us as "Chapis." On the night of Sunday, March 17th, his apartment was destroyed in a fire, and he lost everything he owned.

Chapis is a Mexican immigrant who has been living in New York for 20 years. He has no family here and has worked at Oxomoco since the very first day it opened, six years ago, as a dishwasher. He is one of our most dedicated workers, and personally, I have immense appreciation and gratitude for the hard work and commitment he brings every day.

Yesterday, in tears and desperation, Chapis called me to share what had happened. My heart broke hearing his pain, and I can’t begin to imagine the anguish he’s going through. On top of everything, Chapis had kept his savings at home, not in a bank, so those were lost in the fire as well.

Today, we’re reaching out to ask for your help in raising funds to give him a chance to rebuild his life. Any donation, no matter how big or small, will make an incredible difference during this difficult time.

Hola, somos María Barriga y Miguel Hernández.

Trabajamos en Oxomoco y queremos contarles algo muy triste que le sucedió a nuestro querido compañero de trabajo, Esau, conocido por todos como "Chapis". El domingo 17 de marzo, por la noche, su apartamento se incendió y perdió todo lo que tenía.

Chapis es un inmigrante mexicano que lleva 20 años en Nueva York. No tiene familia aquí y ha trabajado en nuestro restaurante desde el primer día que abrió, hace ya 6 años, como dishwasher. Es uno de los mejores trabajadores que tenemos, y personalmente le tengo un profundo aprecio y agradecimiento por su arduo trabajo y dedicación diaria.

Ayer, entre lágrimas y desesperación, Chapis me llamó para contarme lo que había ocurrido. Mi corazón se arrugó al escuchar su dolor, y no puedo ni imaginar lo que debe sentirse pasar por algo así. Además, Chapis tenía sus ahorros guardados en su casa, no en un banco, por lo que también los perdió en el incendio.

Hoy, le pedimos su ayuda para reunir un poco de dinero que le permita empezar de nuevo. Cualquier donación, grande o pequeña, marcará una gran diferencia en este momento tan difícil para él.
