From Craft to Commerce: Support Women Weavers in Indonesia ꕀ
In the remote province of Rote, Indonesia, the women of the Ina Manenu Weaving Group carry forward the art of Ikat: a centuries-old tradition of storytelling through thread. Their skill is extraordinary, but in a world dominated by fast fashion and limited access to markets, their craft and livelihood is at risk.
“From Craft to Commerce” is a focused initiative to change that. Through targeted business training, digital marketing skills, and mentorship, we aim to equip 20 women artisans with the tools they need to grow sustainable enterprises and reach global customers.

In het hart van Oost-Nusa Tenggara, Indonesië, houden toegewijde ambachtslieden een eeuwenoude traditie in stand: het Ikat-weven. Dit ambacht, dat generaties lang is doorgegeven, staat symbool voor cultureel erfgoed en vakmanschap. Toch wordt deze kunstvorm bedreigd in een snel veranderende wereld. Tegelijkertijd onderzoeken Nederlandse ontwerpers en studenten duurzame mode en zoeken ze naar manieren om traditionele ambachten te combineren met moderne innovatie. Het initiatief Threads of Tradition, opgezet door het Center for Culture and Development – The Netherlands (CCD-NL), brengt deze werelden samen en bevordert duurzame samenwerking tussen Ikat-wevers en Nederlandse ontwerpers.
In september 2025 start het project met een 14-daags trainingsprogramma in Indonesië, waarin ambachtslieden worden opgeleid in milieuvriendelijke verftechnieken, het gebruik van gerecyclede materialen en digitale marketing. Tegelijkertijd nemen Nederlandse studenten en ontwerpers deel aan workshops om van deze traditionele kunst te leren. Het project, in samenwerking met de wevers van Ina Manenu, heeft als doel Ikat-weven te behouden, gemeenschappen economisch te versterken en interculturele samenwerking te stimuleren. Als sluitstuk zal met een indrukwekkende tentoonstelling in Rotterdam worden gehouden.
