A Family in pieces help Daniel and the kids bring Carol Home

My brother, Daniel Omar Rivera, a U.S. citizen born in New Jersey to Puerto Rican parents, and his wife, Carol Ximena Arias, born in Bogotá, Colombia and raised in Elizabeth, NJ, are facing an incredibly painful and unjust situation.

On April 15, 2025, they went to the immigration office in Tampa, Florida, excited and hopeful to adjust Carol’s legal status. I still remember them calling me early that morning—nervous but full of hope. They had all the documentation ready and were confident everything would go well.

And at first, it did. Hours later, they called to say their marriage had been approved. But then, without warning, immigration officers came and took Carol away. My brother wasn’t even allowed to go in or say goodbye. Moments later, he called me back—devastated, confused, and completely broken. Carol had been detained, despite their valid marriage and lawful presence for the appointment.

That’s when this nightmare began.

First, Carol was taken to a detention center in Miami. Then, just days later, she was transferred hundreds of miles away to a facility in Louisiana, where she is still being held—far from her home, her husband, and her two young children.

This has left the entire family in emotional and financial crisis. The children are suffering without their mother. My brother is doing everything he can to stay strong for them, but the stress, depression, and uncertainty have taken a severe toll.
