Help Us Support Carol, Naz, and Nazeer Khan
Dear friends, neighbors, and extended community,
We are reaching out with full hearts and deep urgency to ask for your help supporting our dear friend and neighbor, Carol Peterson, and her family.
In September, Carol’s husband, Naz Khan, suffered a sudden and devastating brain aneurysm. After undergoing emergency brain surgery, he experienced multiple strokes in the days that followed. These strokes have left him unable to walk, talk, or eat. He now requires full-time care for even the most basic daily needs.
Naz’s recovery journey over the past seven months has been heartbreaking, long, and filled with uncertainty. He has spent most of this time in hospitals and rehab facilities. In March, he was finally discharged home—but within just three weeks, he suffered another serious setback and was readmitted. He remains in the hospital today.
This medical crisis has upended every part of Carol and their 6-year-old son Nazeer's life. Carol, who many of you know as a deeply devoted mother and friend, had to take a leave of absence from work in order to be by Naz’s side daily, prepare their home for the new reality of long-term caregiving and to be as present as possible in support of Nazeer during this emotionally strenuous time. This has placed an enormous emotional and financial strain on their family.
Naz and Carol both grew up in Park Slope. They are lifelong Brooklynites, PS 107 alumni, and now, PS 107 parents. They are part of the fabric of this neighborhood—a couple who chose to raise their son here, in the same community that shaped them.
Now, they need their community more than ever.
We are hoping to raise funds to help cover essential expenses: groceries, utilities, medical supplies, and ongoing costs related to Naz’s care. This support will also allow Carol to continue showing up for her husband and son without the added weight of financial instability.
This is a moment to show what real community looks like: neighbors showing up for neighbors, classmates showing up for classmates, friends standing in the gap for one of our own.
Here’s how you can help:
Donate: Every contribution, no matter the size, helps lift this family out of crisis.
Share: Please share this campaign widely with your networks, school communities, and local groups.
Support: If you know of any resources for caregiving assistance, financial aid, or community support services, please reach out.
This is a family that has always been there for others. Now it’s our turn to show up for them—with love, with generosity, and with the kind of care that makes neighborhoods feel like home.
With gratitude,
—Friends of Carol, Naz, and Nazeer
Dear friends, neighbors, and extended community,
It is with immense sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news that our beloved friend and neighbor, Naz Khan, passed away this week.
Naz fought courageously for nine long months after suffering a brain aneurysm and subsequent strokes in September. Despite the best efforts of his medical team and the unyielding love and care from his wife Carol and their 6-year-old son Nazeer, Naz’s body could no longer sustain the tremendous toll of this journey.
Naz was a deeply kind, funny, and generous person. He was a lifelong Brooklynite, a proud PS 107 alum, and a loving husband and father. He had a beautiful way of making people feel at ease—quick to laugh, eager to connect, and always willing to help others. His absence leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
This has been an unimaginably difficult year for Carol and Nazeer. And now, as they grieve the loss of their husband and father, the weight of this loss is compounded by the financial strain that has accompanied months of medical emergencies and caregiving.
We are continuing this fundraiser to help Carol and Nazeer navigate the coming weeks and months. Your contributions will go directly toward:
• Funeral and memorial expenses
• Ongoing living expenses (groceries, rent, utilities)
• Support services for Nazeer as he processes this loss
• Time and space for Carol to grieve, without the immediate pressure to return to work
If you’ve already given, thank you. Your generosity has helped carry this family through some of the hardest days of their lives. If you’re able to give again, or share this campaign with your networks, we are deeply grateful.
Let this be a moment where we surround Carol and Nazeer with the kind of love, care, and solidarity that Naz embodied so effortlessly. Let’s continue to show up for this family—in their grief, in their healing, and in the long road ahead.
With love and deepest gratitude,
—Friends of Carol, Naz, and Nazeer
