A FUNDRAISER FOR THE EMPLOYEES OF CAFÉ DU SOLEIL
San Francisco's Café du Soleil, at the corner of Fillmore and Waller for the last 15 years, recently closed. The café has long been a beloved, important center of neighborhood culture, and lies at a sweet spot in the Lower Haight within walking distance for residents of Duboce Triangle, Hayes Valley, the Fillmore, and the Castro, and was a gathering place that brought customers in from all over the City.
Business owners Mustapha and Christianne Hakkou now seek to reopen the business, if not at the same location then somewhere nearby.
In the meanwhile, the café's many employees, whom many regulars know by name and consider friends, no longer have a source of income. Most of them have worked at the café for years, and given the ongoing Covid-19 health crisis, they now have no opportunity to find other employment to make up for this lost income. Café workers live paycheck to paycheck, and so this economic catastrophe is hitting them particularly hard.
All donations will be split evenly between current employees of the café, so if our funding goal is reached, each of these nine will get $2000 each. This isn't a huge sum, so the more money we raise, the more each will receive. Every cent given goes directly to them.
Each of these people is an important, well-loved, essential member of our community, and it would be a devastating loss if any one of them were forced to go elsewhere because of financial hardship. While we dearly hope that the café will be open for business again in the near future, these folks can't wait until that happens in order to pay their current bills and sustain themselves.
Think of your donation as an accumulation of all of the tips you would have given them were the café still open for business, and top that amount off with a dollop of extra generosity if you're one of those lucky people who have managed to stay employed during these difficult months.
This money not only ensures that some of our favorite people will continue to thrive, but also allows for the possibility, if they so choose, for some of them to return when the café reopens.
