Brooklyn Shabbat Kodesh (BSK) is a lay-led, prayer-based community of anti/non-zionist and diasporic Jews based in Brooklyn. We meet every 4-6 weeks on Friday nights for a traditional egalitarian Kabbalat Shabbat prayer service. We are uniquely positioned as a community that is both anti-zionist and traditional egalitarian. While other communities offer either traditional egalitarian prayer, or a space for anti-zionist Jews to gather and organize, BSK offers both.
Our community seeks to build the world we want to see through decoupling Zionism and Judaism and rooting ourselves amongst radical diasporic Jewish communities to work in relationship for collective liberation. We deepen our relationships with one another through song, ritual, Teshuva, and Shabbat.
We strive to empower the leadership of those who have been excluded from participation in Jewish institutions—Black Jews, indigenous Jews, Jews of Color, Queer Jews, and any Jews with lineages and histories that are essential to widening our view of Jewish and American history. We acknowledge ongoing white supremacy, colonization, assimilation, homophobia, and transphobia and seek to create a prayer community where people who are vulnerable to these forms of violence feel welcome, accepted, and safe.
We are seeking funds to help get BSK on its feet. We need funds to cover space-use, food, siddurim, and other supplies. Your contribution is essential to making this one-of-a-kind prayer community possible. Any amount helps, and we hope that you'll join us in prayer soon :)
