Support Brooklyn Kids Facing ICE Abduction Trauma

URGENT! MORE HELP NEEDED TO SUPPORT CHILDREN TRAUMATIZED BY ICE IN BROOKLYN!

The need for the packages described below has been much greater than we anticipated. We have only distributed to 3 schools and have already given out 45 Care Kits! We have at least 10 more schools we are trying to provide Care Kits for and only 55 left! If we can raise about $2,600 more, we can do an additional 50. PLEASE! Donate or share the fundraiser- we do not want to tell schools there is nothing left for their students.

The original information is below!
Please help support children traumatized by ICE in Brooklyn, NY.

Hello! We are just like you- a group of people who can't stand to see what is happening to families going through separations due to abduction and detention by ICE. We have decided to do something about the children suffering direct trauma as a result of abduction.

We are creating ready-to-go care packages for children in families that are directly impacted by abduction. Currently, our goal is to have packages available for elementary aged children. Though in the future we hope to expand to other ages as well. Our efforts will be centering on Brooklyn, NY, especially the neighborhoods highly impacted by ICE. There is a school in Brooklyn that already already has 22 families that have reported the abduction of a family member. We will distribute these care packages through the public school's clinical teams so that the packages are delivered by familiar and safe people.

The packages will include the following things purchased with your donations;
  • A handmade vibrant tote bag with an interior safe pocket to put a totem or precious photos.
  • Sturdy art supplies, to help children process their feelings, that can take high pressure use like a solid notebook, strong crayons, and colored pencils.

  • A monarch butterfly art project to build pride in being an immigrant.

  • A squeezable stuffy to hug.
  • Strong fidgets to absorb extra energy and stress.

  • A special story about ICE abduction designed specifically for impacted children.
  • An age appropriate book in Spanish to build resilience and share reading time with caregivers.

  • An age appropriate book in English about a child's experience of a parent being detained or deported.
  • A social story to help children process what is happening to them and feel less alone.
  • And for the caregivers there will be a folder containing resources and information, including easy calming techniques for children as well as information about how trauma might manifest in their child and ideas on how to respond.

Currently, the care packages will be in English and Spanish, but we hope to expand to other languages.

Please help make this dream of helping a reality. The children who have lost someone deserve to be cared for by all of us. If you have read this far, you are one of the people who want to give children love and stability just like we do.

Through our work directly with these children in the NYC public school system, we have seen the effects of the trauma first hand. There are children too afraid to come to school. There are children who have stopped speaking at school. There are children who are lashing out in anger at people they love. There are children who are now going hungry due to loss of income. There are children who now cling to their remaining safe adult and won't let go. This care package won't fix things, but it will give families researched based tools to deal with the trauma. And hopefully, it will give them some comfort too.

*I am a public school teacher in Brooklyn who works directly with impacted children . I will be managing the collection of funds and purchasing of items listed above. I can assure that the care packages are distributed through the clinical teams at Brooklyn elementary schools. All funds will be used for the creation of the care packages. Any amount over our initial goal of $10,000 will be used to expand the age ranges of care packages available. I will post updates tracking the creation and delivery of care packages so you will know how many children your donation has supported.
