Hello and happy springtime! My name is Harrison and I am an organizer with Bridge St. Community Garden. We successfully fundraised last spring for our 2024 growing season, and now we are once again asking for your generosity! We have some exciting things happening in the garden this year and we can't wait to get our hands in the soil.
Bridge St. Garden has been growing in the west grand neighborhood of Grand Rapids for the past ~6 years. Located on a vacant lot, the garden provides free growing space to community members. All the produce that is grown in the garden is available to the community at no cost. We also host several potlucks throughout the year to show off the fruits of our labor. In addition to the garden access and free produce, we have recently built a community pantry stocked with non-perishable and ready-to-eat foods, hygiene and sexual health products, literature, clothing and more. Our goal is to contribute to a more resilient, autonomous and hyper-local food system in our neighborhood, to offer a welcoming, beautiful space, and to share our knowledge and resources with our community.
The money that we are requesting would go towards multiple projects and would allow us to make purchases of much needed tools and infrastructure. This includes:
- Four 3'x8' raised beds filled with compost to increase our veggie production
- Hand tools, hoes, and trowels
- A small greenhouse on site to drastically increase the amount of plant starts we can grow and distribute to our community
- Materials for an improved fence, as ours is falling apart
- Landscape fabric
- A 3-bay composting system to make use of all of our nutrient rich green waste as well as organic matter from various restaurants in our area
Here is a list of itemized needs for the garden, for the sake of transparency.
Thank you times a million! We hope to see you in the garden this summer.
