Party of 4… make that 7!
We’re blessed with beautiful problems in our lives, and we could use a hand!
Greetings,
When my wife and I met in 2004, we were immediately drawn toward one another. She had a daughter, Simone from a previous relationship, and the three of us soon formed a family. In the years since, we have as a lesbian couple faced our share of challenges and hate, but through it all, we have relied on the love that we share to get us through. Our network of family, friends, and co-workers has always supported us, showing us time and again the meaning of the word “community,” for which we are all enormously grateful.
Over the last thirteen years, my wife and I have built a relationship based on commitment, devotion, and communication, and year after year, we look back on the time that we have spent together only to realize that we are closer than ever. We are today a family of 7: it’s me, my wife Isha, Simone (now 14), our son Kitai (who’s 2), and three more girls on the way.
Yes, three more! After Kitai was born, we decided to get pregnant again, and lo and behold, the pregnancy turned into triplets, due June 13th, 2018. We could not be more thrilled for what is to come. Since moving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas in 2013, we have experienced some ups and downs, but our family and our home are ready to support these three new bundles of joy.
In October 2014, during out first round of fertility, one of my brothers offered to become our donor, making it possible for us to have a child that would genetically represent both sides of our family, a tremendous gift for which we consider ourselves blessed. It only took one round of IUI for us to get pregnant, and in September 2017, a little more than two years after Kitai was born, was got married in San Diego. After twelve years together, it was a long time coming!
Knowing that we wanted to get pregnant with another child after the wedding, we started fertility treatments a second time in November 2017, my brother again acting as our donor. Soon after that, we went in for an ultrasound, where the tech told us that we would be having fraternal twins. We were happy, though we were also a little concerned about our finances – and about Isha, who’s 5 feet tall and who weighs just over 100 pounds. Two weeks later, we went in for another check-up, this time with a new ultrasound tech, who tells us that we would be having identical twins. We were confused: we thought that the twins were fraternal, that they were in separate sacs. The tech took another look, and it turned out that there were in fact three heartbeats: we were having triplets.
The doctors pushed us to go through reduction surgery, which is basically a procedure to abort 1 or 2 of the fetuses in an effort to make the other 1 or 2 fetuses viable. With that procedure, however, there is no guarantee that any of the fetuses will make it, and because we are just so excited at the prospect of our family nearly doubling in size overnight we truly feel this is God’s Plan. Although this is an unexpected pregnancy of triplets, the thought of doing such a procedure brings sadness. As we endure the challenges, the rewards and blessings are much greater.
Because of the touchy nature and high risk of the pregnancy, unfortunately, we have not been able to throw a baby shower. On top of that, the medical bills are starting to pile up. We are writing to you in the hopes that you can lend us a hand as we move forward through the next few months, which promise to be difficult ones for us one way or another. We are extremely grateful for whatever help we can get, and we thank you for being in our lives.
Sincerely yours,
Leilani & Isha
