My name is Tyesia Walker and I’m a granddaughter of Catherine E. Walker. I am reaching out on behalf of my 92-year-old grandmother, known and loved by so many in our community as “Big Momma.”
For well over 50 years, she has lived in her home in Concord, NC, opening its doors to family, friends, neighbors, and church members alike. Her house has been more than a roof over her head, it has been a gathering place filled with love, laughter, and faith.
Sadly, in July, a tree fell on her home, causing severe damage. Her sunroom was destroyed beyond repair and had to be torn down, and the roof had to be reframed. Insurance covered only part of the repairs, and not nearly enough to rebuild her sunroom or address deeper structural issues.
As work began, we discovered an even more urgent problem: the flooring throughout the house was caving in and at risk of collapsing. For her safety, my grandmother cannot live in the house until this is fixed. Because insurance would not cover the flooring, our family decided to step in but the costs have quickly added up beyond what we can handle alone.
This isn’t the first time my grandmother has faced challenges with her home. Back in the early 1990s, Cabarrus County launched a program to help seniors with home repairs at no cost. My grandmother was selected, but her project was left unfinished when funds ran out and to make matters worse, she had to pay money back despite the program being advertised as free to seniors. Those incomplete repairs are part of the reason we are facing these flooring issues today.
We have also exhausted every other option, banks, private lenders, and even home equity loans because of her age (92) and not having any established credit, my grandmother does not qualify for traditional funding.
Despite these setbacks, her spirit has remained unshaken. At 92, she still carries herself with grace, faith, and joy. She has been a true pillar of the community and the church, cooking meals, offering encouragement, and raising generations who affectionately call her Big Momma.
We’ve already begun the work with a trustworthy contractor who has gone above and beyond to help us. The house had to be completely gutted due to termite damage and old wood, and the rebuilding is underway. We are determined to finish this project so that Big Momma can return to the home she has cherished for more than half her life.
Here’s where we need your help: We still have a gap to close in covering the costs of restoring her floors and completing the rebuild. Every dollar raised will go directly toward construction expenses. To keep everything transparent, we’ll share pictures and updates throughout the process, so you can see the progress your generosity makes possible.
Please consider donating to help us bring Big Momma home. Whether you give $10, $100, or simply share this campaign, you are making a difference. If you would like to give outside of this platform, please contact me.
Let’s honor her legacy of love and community by helping her return to the place she has called home for more than five decades.
From the bottom of our hearts, we say THANK YOU ❤️
