Ava’s Promise

16 years ago , in the fragile moment between life and death, I beheld a radiant light. As I

stood on the cusp of eternity, deciding whether to go or stay, the scent of my daughter's

dirty hair (she rode horses) tugged me back.

A new heartbeat pulsated within me from an emergency heart transplant.

I vowed to champion life against all odds. I promised that if I could return to be my

daughter’s mom again, I would spend the rest of my life giving others a second chance at

life, like i’d received.

Ten days earlier I had died, was resuscitated and placed on life support. I’d had a rare

auto -immune disease that had been misdiagnosed as psoriasis for three months. I went

from taking dance class every day to needing a walker. Suddenly I was one of the more

than 100,000 people in the U.S. waiting for a life saving organ transplant. . Mine was one

of the new names that got added to that waiting list. (Every ten minutes someone new

gets added to the list and 17 people die every day waiting ) My pledge, made literally in the throes of mortality, is the heartbeat of Ava’s Heart-a CA

501 (c)3 non profit organization . Ava’s Heart is a beacon of hope and house of second

chances for those needing post-transplant housing.

DID YOU KNOW?......that if you don’t have a place to live before and 3 months after your transplant close

to your transplant center you won’t be able to receive ur life saving organ. Doctors

mandate this housing, but insurance doesn’t pay for it and the hospitals don’t provide it.

Ava’s Heart will provide at no cost pre and post op transplant housing.

Ava’s Heart stands as a testament to her promise to address this healthcare inequity.

We provide essential pre and post -transplant housing and foster a community of support and resilience in one of our

three locations.

People travel from all over the US and the world to LA we do 32 percent of all transplants

in the US. We have some of the best centers here and have treatments and therapies that

are not offered at many other centers. The state of Nevada has no transplant centers. –

With homes that have sheltered over 400 patients and their caregivers for the past 14

years. Ava’s heart is a sanctuary, nurturing new beginnings. Our work is proof that post

transplant housing is life saving.
