Support ‘the Voice of the Voiceless’, 1st Eritrean Satellite Tv Station – Atv
Back in January of 2019, Eritreans and friends in Diaspora crowd funded ATV (Asena TV) and made sure that it was successfully launched. ATV instantly gave the voiceless Eritreans hope. It also kept exposing one of the most secretive and repressive regimes of our time. As a result, the regime became desperate. The pioneer TV station which ran on a shoestring budget made a significant impact in counterbalancing the government’s propaganda machine; and become a household name amongst Eritreans within the country in a few months. There was a gap to be bridged. And you collaborated with ATV to make that happen.
Acknowledging the huge part you played in the first chapter of our collective success, ATV once again asks you – Eritreans in Diaspora and friends of Eritrea to support ATV financially so that the much loved Satellite TV station can stay on air for another year. Your support is what ensures the torch of hope for the oppressed Eritreans stays alive.
At this stage, satellite TV is the most powerful medium of communication in Eritrea, as there is limited internet access due to government policy to control information flow. For this very reason, ATV’s service is viewed as irreplaceable by the Eritrean people as they look up to it as the champion of persistence and freedom.
In the fast-evolving political climate in Eritrea and the region at large, a media outlet such as ATV needs to be properly funded in order to become sustainable. Momentarily, its sustainability is what enables it to continue being an alternative voice and would provide the foundation of independent media in the aftermath of the dictatorial rule.
The £100,000 ($120, 000) fund generated from this funding page will be invested in covering the core expense of ATV’s media operation, i.e. the monthly satellite TV transmission costs.

Assenna Foundation Ltd is UK based independent media outlet that aims to promote freedom of expression in Eritrea. It is not affiliated to any political organization. Its sole purpose is to become an alternative media by filling the information gap created by the one-party state that doesn’t allow independent media.
Assenna (Foundation Ltd) was launched in 2007 as an independent website: www.assenna.com. This was followed by a shortwave radio broadcast from 2009. Now, Atv (Asena Satellite Tv) which was launched in January this year broadcasts daily 24 hours in Tigrinya and ones a week in Tigre to Eritrea and the neighbouring countries including the Middle East. Atv programs which replaced the satellite radio shows that continued for a decade with voluntary financial support from committed diaspora Eritreans is also accessed worldwide online at assenna.com and social media.
Background to the lack of press freedom in Eritrea
On 18 September 2001, the Eritrean government banned vibrant and growing independent media outlets in the country under the pretext of “national security' following an unnecessary and disastrous war with Ethiopia between 1998 and 2000. Since then, there have been no independent media in the country. Eritrea today has a single radio station; one television channel and a daily newspaper - all owned and controlled by the regime. The government hires and fires journalists at will, controls editorial decisions and imposes restrictions on policy and technical levels. The state media has become a propaganda machine: a mouthpiece of the Government’s corrupting influence on the general public.
The government of Eritrea also places technical hurdles on the flow of international information into the country in order to keep its citizens in the dark. The Communications Department has absolute control over Internet networks, including Internet cafés.
It is no surprise, therefore, that Eritrea was at the bottom of the World Press Freedom Index for eight consecutive years and in both 2017 and 2018 ranked 179 out of 180 - just ahead of North Korea.
