Support Aster Nebro to Stay on the Northside!
Donation protected
Due to loss of extra income during the pandemic, we call on community to help Aster Nebro stay in her home on the Northside and afford a trip to visit Ethiopia to say goodbye to her mom.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s been 5 years since Minneapolis lost poet, artist, teacher, and brother Kirk Washington Jr.-- our BroSun -- and 5 years since Aster Nebro lost her husband and best friend. A few years after Kirk’s passing, Aster was able to fulfill a lifelong dream with the support of her community by purchasing a home for her and Kirk’s two daughters, Keah and Azalea, on the Northside. It was deeply important for Aster to move back to the Northside to be close to community while her daughters finished high school.
As Aster’s “kids”, we know it has never been easy for her as a single parent household to keep up with bills, the mortgage, and the expenses of raising two daughters. We have all watched Aster push through to maintain stability for herself all while she continues to grieve the loss of her husband. But when the pandemic hit, she was unable to rely on odd jobs and help from her daughter (after she lost her own job) to make ends meet. She’s fallen behind several months on her mortgage and other bills and is at risk of falling deeper into debt as COVID continues to squeeze out her opportunities for extra income. We are worried that Aster will lose her home if she is not able to catch up and have room to breathe and save money for the rest of the pandemic.
Additionally, Aster’s mother back home in Ethiopia is in poor health and does not have much longer to live. Aster has not seen her mother in 15 years and wants more than anything to say goodbye to her before it’s too late. We are hoping to raise enough money to help Aster make a trip home to be with her beloved mom.
If you know Aster, you know her because she’s invited you into her home, fed you and offered you any food she has, treated you like her own, and loved on you when you needed it. In the past, Aster has been active on the Harrison Neighborhood Association board and part of the Redeemer Lutheran Church community as an organizer of the Breakfast Club with her husband Kirk . Please join us in giving that love back to Aster by supporting her to stay in her home and continue to be a vital part of the Northside community.
Budget breakdown:
3 months past due bills and mortgage - $7,500
Money for 6 months’ mortgage payments and bills- $15,000
Trip to Ethiopia for Aster and daughters to say goodbye to her mom, including citizenship fee and paychecks missed while away from work- $12,500
Total: $35,000
Thank You!
Angela, Claire, Denetrick & William
