Support Ashton Phillips' Medical Mission to Kenya

Hello! My name is Ashton Phillips and I am a freshman at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. I have been blessed with an incredible opportunity to participate in The Citadel's Kenya Medical Camp this summer. The medical camp is a four-week study abroad program in Nairobi, Kenya. The Citadel's Kenya Medical Camp is the largest free primary health care provider in Kenya. Last year's group of students treated about 11,000 patients! We will be working in 3 major slums throughout Nairobi, where we will treat an estimated 300-900 patients/day. The patients we treat typically have neither access to basic healthcare nor basic living needs.

This study abroad opportunity enables me to serve selflessly. As a Christian, my primary inspiration to serve comes from Christ, who says, “Whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:44-45).

Secondly, I have a strong desire to be a medical missionary as a physician. Using medicine as a path to bring care and genuine compassion to those around the world who need it most is a cause I am deeply passionate about. Nothing excites me more than having the opportunity to serve God’s creation across the seas, and this experience will give me an introduction to this service.

Lastly, I want to grow in my knowledge of medical care and spend most of my time observing the physicians to see how they practice. However, I also want to learn about healthcare in its entirety and investigate all the facets of the medical camp in Nairobi, including dentistry, lab testing, triage, pharmacy, nursing, sonography, and physical therapy. This provides a larger scope of exposure to the various healthcare fields it takes to provide comprehensive care. I also believe this experience will stimulate my growth in practical life skills like communication and time management, in addition to learning about their culture, customs, and language.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I need your help to make it possible! Your generous support will help cover travel expenses, lodging, and necessary resources to ensure I can fully participate in this mission. Any donation, big or small, brings me one step closer to making a real impact.

Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and belief in this mission!
