I am Nicole and I am Anna’s daughter her only child actually. My mom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s back in 2016 and in 2019 she started to show signs of dementia. At this point she didn’t have a will or Power of Attorney and was living independently. Myself and her wonderful friends helped her move into assisted living but that ultimately wasn’t enough. We moved her into memory care in Seattle until her funds ran out and then moved her up to Everett near me. For the last year my mom has been in nursing home care where she will remain for the rest of her life. I was not the original power of attorney and was only given the job back at the end of 2022. What I found was that taxes hadn’t been filed since 2019 and that she was not having taxes withheld from her retirement cash outs. When I went to file her taxes in January 2023 for the 2022 year she owed 2700. My mom was in the process of getting on Medicaid meaning her funds had been exhausted to under 2000.00. DSHS kindly gave us assistance and paid that bill off. Last year I got a notice from the IRS saying the we didn’t declare some of her retirement cash out. I never received a 10-99 from this company so I didn’t know anything about it. They claimed because of the failure to account for this and the late fees, penalties and interest she now owed 10k. I am not able to talk to the irs directly I tried. They don’t recognize POA and she isn’t competent enough to sign their documents. I have sent letters saying she doesn’t have the funds. She lives on social security and all but 105 dollars goes to her nursing home care. I got a letter in March informing me that the amount was reduced to 9,527 which didn’t help much. Now they are starting to garnish part of her social security which leaves her short for her nursing home care. I have supplemented it the past month but I cannot afford to keep this up until the taxes are paid. Please help Anna and her family enjoy their remaining time with her instead of worrying about her losing care. Please share this to anyone you may know. This will soon me a reality for so many families dealing with the cost of long term care.
