The Jewish Coalition for Immigrant Justice NW’s Steering Committee members ask you to follow this young family’s story and join support them here. A gift of $36, $72, $180, $360 (multiples of 18 represents chai or life in Jewish tradition) would enable Ana and Flor to secure legal representation, which is very challenging to find at present. They will need to fight hard to win their asylum case and would benefit from securing a lawyer as soon as possible.

With the support of HIAS’ Border Fellow, members of JCIJ recently helped Ana and her young daughter Flor enter the US under Humanitarian Parole and reunite with their family in Seattle.

*Trigger warning for violent/disturbing information.*

Ana and Flor fled El Salvador after a gang broke into their house and attacked Ana’s mother, which caused cardiac arrest and resulted in her death. Some years earlier, Flor’s uncle was murdered by the gang. Fearing for their safety, they set out to declare asylum at the US border.

After migrating from El Salvador, Ana and Flor were forced to wait at the border in Reynosa, Mexico for almost six months before being allowed to enter. Due to the “Remain in Mexico” MPP and Title 42 policies, they were not permitted to enter at the port of entry to declare asylum. They lived in a makeshift tent in a plaza thick with mud, exposed to heavy rains and winter weather conditions. Flor was chronically sick, and they often did not have food to eat. They were kidnapped from the plaza by drug traffickers and given 24 hours for their family to pay the ransom “or else.”

Please consider supporting Ana and Flor to help them get settled in Seattle and address the trauma that has impacted both their physical and mental health. The living conditions at the border have caused major gastrointestinal issues for the child, Flor, who needs significant medical care. They are incredibly resilient, and Flor is already beginning to make friends and learn English at school.

Note about legal representation: We have not been able to secure a low bono or pro bono lawyer, as lawyers and orgs are overwhelmed by current demands of sped up and shortened dedicated docket timelines for asylum cases. The lowest fee we have found for a private lawyer to take Ana & Flor's case is $8,500.

Support at any amount is much appreciated!
