Ana Aviles is a devoted single mother of four children: ages 20, 18, 16, and 11. Two of her children have Down syndrome, and Ana has always been their strongest advocate and source of love. As her neighbor since 2014, I have seen firsthand the strength and warmth she brings to her family and our community. I have also had the privilege of helping care for her children, who are truly remarkable and do not deserve to face such hardship.

Ana bravely fought breast cancer, but after a period of remission, the cancer returned—first to her liver, and now it has spread to her brain. On January 10th, Ana was hospitalized as her condition worsened, and she has since been placed on hospice care. Doctors have shared that she has only days or hours left. Her 20-year-old son has stepped up to care for his siblings, especially his two sisters with special need. This responsibility is overwhelming, and he is unable to work while caring for them. The family is also facing urgent financial challenges: they are behind on rent, the landlord has announced a rent increase, and there are no funds for Ana’s final resting place. This fundraiser is to help Ana’s children through this heartbreaking transition.
