Alma- After raising her daughter and working hard all her life is going through significant hardship and on the verge of losing her home due to unpaid taxes.
You may know Alma from Laluna in East Haven, where she has worked as a waitress for the last 17 years.
Her daughter has gotten lost in a battle with drugs, and as a result, Alma has received full legal custody of her beautiful granddaughter. With the help of CT state, friends, and family (but most of all Alma, who she refers to as Mema), Stormy is thriving. She is so smart and loving, despite the very difficult circumstances that arose with her birth mother only 2 years ago.
On September 21, 2024, Alma had a very bad fall, breaking her left arm near her rotator cuff, which affected her left shoulder and her back. Because of this injury, she has been unable to go back to work waitressing. Falling into these hard times, she has been lucky to have a little income from Social Security, but it has been barely enough for gas, electricity, phone, water, car, and home insurance—not to mention the very quickly growing 4-year-old.
Alma has received a letter placing a lien on her property. The city has explained they cannot work with her on a payment arrangement and will be assigning a State Marshal to serve her. We’ve reached out to DCF, social workers, and everyone we can think of trying to find help; however, because it is property taxes, there have been no programs we can find to assist.
To make matters worse for them, Alma just recently was involved in a car accident leaving them without consistent transportation to pre-school, doctors visits, and all other activities.
It may not be a lot of money to some, but to Alma and Stormy, it would mean the world. Please help us save Mema’s house and help us keep Stormy in her home. At 4 years old, this beautiful girl has been through more than some adults. Please help if you can.
The Funds will go directly to the town of East Haven for back taxes owed on their home. Anything additional will be used for future taxes on the home.
