Help Rebuild My Grandmother’s Home After Hurricane Melissa

Hi everyone,

My name is Alistiar Drummond, and I’m raising funds for my grandmother and her husband in Westmoreland, Jamaica, whose home was severely damaged by Hurricane Melissa.

The storm devastated their community—ripping the roof completely off their home and causing extensive water damage to the walls, floors, and belongings inside. Both of them are elderly and unable to manage the repairs or rebuild process on their own.

My grandmother is a breast cancer survivor who continues to battle health challenges and is unable to work due to her illness. Despite everything she’s endured, she remains a strong, God-fearing woman whose faith has carried her through life’s hardest moments.

When my biological mother abandoned me as a child, my grandmother didn’t hesitate — she took me in, raised me, and gave me the love and guidance I needed. After losing her only son — my father, who was a proud Jamaican police officer — she still stood strong and made sure I stayed in school and had every chance to succeed.

She has always been my foundation, my protector, and my greatest blessing. Everything I’ve become is because of her strength, sacrifice, and unconditional love. Seeing her lose her home after surviving so much — cancer, loss, and now a hurricane — has been devastating. I currently live overseas and can’t be there in person, which makes this even harder.

What Happened

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica with destructive winds and heavy rainfall that tore through several parishes, including Westmoreland. My grandparents’ house took the full impact, leaving it unlivable—with no roof, flooding throughout the rooms, and much of their furniture and appliances destroyed.

They’ve lost not only parts of their home but also their sense of safety and comfort.

Every dollar raised will go directly toward:

• Replacing the damaged roof (materials, labor, and installation)

• Rebuilding the home with a reinforced deck/concrete structure to ensure long-term durability and hurricane resistance

• Repairing walls and flooring damaged by flooding

• Replacing basic necessities such as a bed, fridge, and stove

• Providing short-term relief (food, medical supplies, and daily needs) while the house is being rebuilt

Local contractors estimate the cost to replace the roof and rebuild using decked concrete to be between JMD 1.5 – 2 million (approximately USD $10,000 – $13,000).

Why I’m Asking for Help

My grandmother has always been the heart and hero of my story — a woman who took care of everyone around her, even when she had little to give.

She raised me when no one else would.

She guided me when I had no one else to look up to.

And she believed in me long before I believed in myself.

Now it’s my turn to take care of her.
