Having run in the 2024 by-election, I am excited to stand again as an Independent Candidate in the local Elections on 7th May.

I believe that everyone in our community has equal and immeasurable worth. Equality doesn't mean we're all the same, it means honouring our differences while ensuring everyone has a chance to thrive.

Whether you're a disabled resident needing housing that truly fits your needs, a parent seeking a good education for your child or safe community spaces that work for your family, or a neighbour ( housed or homeless) whose voice hasn't been heard - yet, I see you and will work for you.

Born in London in the early 1970s to a Nigerian/Welsh mother and a Jewish/Cuban/Jamaican father, I grew up surrounded by diverse cultures and perspectives that would later shape my passion for justice, leadership and community. A young mother of two daughters, I faced profound loss when widowed at the age of 29. Determined to build a meaningful future for my family, I channelled my strength and abilities into raising my daughters whilst pursuing a career dedicated to helping others thrive. Today, my daughters have gone on to extraordinary success—one an international singer-songwriter and the other an Olympic Gold medal champion.

Since 1988 I have been a member of the Islington Community. I’m not just looking for a seat at the table; I’m here to build a longer table because for me a community is a family with a much bigger table.

What is most apparent right now is that we have the right to demand that those who hold political office are ethical leaders. We need more humility, integrity, commitment, transparency and a willingness to listen to and collaborate with everyone – not just the powerful and privileged. Nowhere is this more important than at the local level.

Everything that our local councils do, plan for, fund and prioritise has a huge impact on all our lives. That’s why I believe Hillrise deserves a fully committed independent councillor who comes from our Community and understands our diversity. As an independent voice I am willing and able to speak up without fear of being silenced by party political pressure whenever Islington council’s actions fall short of what we have a right to expect.

From housing to health, from the environment to education, and from safer streets to ensuring meaningful support services for those who have the least and have suffered the most due to years of austerity; if we are to have the services and policies we need, everything Islington Council does must be subject to transparent independent review, scrutiny, and where necessary improvement.

I have learnt so much over the years from my work as a teacher, therapist and mentor in Islington schools; as a stakeholder manager in Parliament for the Shadow Chancellor during Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership and as an activist on issues around youth services, disabilities, women and pensions, and migrant and marginalised communities. I will always advocate for peace, justice and human rights from the streets of London to Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Afghanistan, Haiti, Iran and beyond.

It would be a great honour to represent my community as an elected councillor. I will be proud to represent Hillrise and to do everything in my power to work with and represent our diverese and wonderful community.

If you, like me, believe that the recent rise of independent candidates in politics is a positive sign for democracy, I hope you will support my campaign.

Any support is greatly appreciated, whether that be casting a ballot as a voter in Hillrise ward on 7th May, viewing and sharing my social media posts, canvassing for my campaign, or donating to my crowdfunder.
Every little bit of support makes a big difference.

A stronger, fairer, more hopeful Islington is possible when we work together. Will you join me?

Alison Stoecker.
