Support Alex for Volunteering in Costa Rica

Hi family and friends,

I wanted to update you on my plans post grad, and am asking for help and support in regards to an opportunity I know will greatly benefit me both personally and professionally.

I’m graduating from UW in June with my B.S. in Neuroscience and a minor in Bioethics. During my gap years before medical school I plan to obtain more clinical experience and continue to devote myself to causes I’m passionate about: mental health, LGBTQ advocacy, and providing agency to vulnerable and stigmatized populations. Also, I want to further develop my Spanish speaking skills, since this is imperative to being the best possible provider for my future patients.

I’ve been volunteering as a patient assistant since January at the Bailey-Boushay House, and I’ve left with a smile on my face every day I’ve volunteered. Spending time with those living with HIV/AIDs and neurological disorders/diseases, I’ve seen the positive impact companionship and connection have brought to those who are often stigmatized and dehumanized. The stories I’ve heard, and will continue to hear, have profoundly shaped my outlook on medicine and society as a whole.

I found a healthcare volunteering program in Costa Rica which I believe would greatly help develop my Spanish skills, and allow me to serve populations living with HIV/AIDs and provide them with companionship, care, and agency they deserve. In addition, I will gain valuable insight into different healthcare practices and unique challenges that will aid in shaping my perspective.

I would be living with a host family for 2 months in San José, and would be volunteering 4 hours a day in local clinics/hospitals. In addition, I would take Spanish classes every day and work on a medical campaign.

The total cost of the program is $5000. I also need to factor in airfare, food, daily travel expenses, and vaccinations/travel docs which is around another $2000

I’m hopefully going to be working part time this summer in my research lab at the VA, and studying to take the MCAT in September. Ideally, I would participate in this program during October and November.

I’m planning on going, but am asking for support since I won’t be able to work full time this summer to fully pay for the program. Any help and support would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
