Hello, my name is Albert Von Raesfeld (at times I go by Alby Bastida) and I live in the Bay Area. I’m sharing my story because I believe transformation can become a gift that helps others. I’ve fought weight and bullying for as long as I can remember. The heaviest I’ve been was close to 400 pounds, and the pain of those years taught me something essential: meaningful change is possible, and it often starts with one small step—and the right support.
This year, at 40, I chose to take that step. I started therapy, began medication for weight management, and earned my Certified Personal Trainer and Nutritionist certifications. I also celebrated nearly a year of being clean from binge eating—an eating disorder I’ve battled for years—and I’m going strong. I want to build a space not just for fitness, but also for those who struggle with eating disorders, where they can find a safe environment for support groups like OA or counseling, and feel truly understood and supported in their healing journey.
I’m not stopping there. I want to use what I’ve learned—about perseverance, nutrition, movement, and mental health—to help others rewrite their stories.
But there’s a bigger life change on the horizon. California’s cost of living makes this dream harder to pursue, and I’m planning to move to North Carolina next summer to start fresh, with the goal of turning my certifications into a sustainable fitness career that serves my community.
What I want to build:
A personal gym space, either at home or in a small, local studio, where I can train clients one-on-one and in small groups. A pathway to reach people who need guidance—especially those who’ve struggled with weight, motivation, self-doubt, and eating disorders. A schedule that allows me to offer affordable, sometimes pro bono or discounted sessions to those who can’t pay full price. And a dedicated space for mental health support and recovery, offering a safe haven for people working through eating disorders, including support groups and counseling options.
How the funds will be used:
Phase 1: Core equipment and space setup Adjustable dumbbells, power rack, bench, flooring, mats, resistance bands, mobility gear, basic cardio equipment and safety measures, small storefront or home gym setup (permits, insurance, safety resources)
Phase 2: Certifications, insurance, and initial marketing CPR/AED, liability insurance, continued education Website, branding, simple booking system, introductory marketing
Phase 3: Launch and client onboarding Initial client programs, promotional events, onboarding materials Scholarships or discounted programs for underserved individuals
Phase 4: Operating reserve and contingency Ongoing expenses, utilities, maintenance, and a small reserve

I’ve transformed my own health and mindset, and I want to help others do the same—safely, sustainably, and with compassion.
Community impact:
By establishing a space in North Carolina, I can offer accessible training, nutrition guidance, mentorship, and a safe space for those working through eating disorders.

Why North Carolina and the move?
I’m relocating next summer to create a more affordable path to opening a meaningful fitness business and building a better life. The goal is to serve my new community with inclusive, accessible fitness opportunities—and a safe space for mental health and recovery.
