Dear friends, family, and supporters,
My name is Aidan Joyal. I am 16 years old and a Life Scout in Troop 118, located in Denville, NJ. I am currently working towards the rank of Eagle Scout, the most prestigious in scouting. The project I have designed allows me to connect with my community in a deeply personal way.
I am building a musical sensory garden at Celebrate the Children School in Denville, NJ. The garden will include 4 playground drums, each tuned to a different pitch. Additionally, there will be a thongophone, made from PVC pipes that function similarly to a pipe organ. A metallophone will also be installed as the equivalent of a metal xylophone.
Included with the instruments will be a professionally-made sign, with a label to designate the project, and 4 QR codes. These QR codes will each link to a video of me verbally explaining how each instrument works, followed by my demonstration.
This project has personal significance for me for two reasons. First, my sister is 10 years old, has autism, and is nonverbal. She attends Celebrate the Children, as the school is centered on providing support for students who face challenges with regulation, communication, social interaction, and other characteristics unique to each student. Having the opportunity to provide this resource for Celebrate the Children is so incredible for me because not only am I able to support Zoey, but also many others whose challenges I witness daily.
Second, this project resonates with me as a musician. I grew up as a member of a church choir beginning at 6 years old, and my family is practically all musicians. I myself began playing the trombone as a 10-year-old and have pursued that passion ever since. Having these instruments available on the Celebrate the Children campus means that students who may not otherwise be able to attend music lessons at a typical music school will have access to a musical resource where they learn and play every day.
If you wish to support the building of the musical sensory garden, please consider making a tax-deductible financial contribution. Any amount will help make this project a reality! Additionally, you can show your support by sharing my project description with others who may be willing to donate.
Thank you for your consideration and support of this project. I look forward to updating you on my progress and inviting you to the unveiling of the completed garden.
With Gratitude,
