Help a Veteran Secure Safe Housing After a Year of Hardship

We’re reaching out on behalf of Bill, who has no one left to advocate for him, and who now has a real chance at stability, if he can just make it through the next month.

About a year ago, Bill was facing eviction while struggling with early dementia and living in extreme hoarding conditions. With no family or a support system, he was in crisis.

Through a referral, we stepped in. Over five long, difficult days we cleaned out his home, working through severe clutter and unsanitary conditions to salvage his belongings. We moved those items into storage and helped relocate him into an extended-stay motel until he found a permanent place to live, but then we discovered his financial situation wouldn’t allow him to afford a long term rental.

Since then, we’ve been working pro bono to help secure permanent housing. As a Vietnam veteran, Bill qualifies for support, but navigating the system is complex and time-consuming. We began the intensive application process to get him into the Veterans Home in Yountville, California, a highly sought after facility with limited availability.

While we worked through that process, his limited savings slowly ran out. Bill has just over $1,600 left in his bank account.

Now, after months of uncertainty, we’ve received the incredible news that he’s been accepted to the VA Home in Yountville!

This is life-changing. It means safety, medical support, and a stable environment suited to his needs for the rest of his life.

But there’s one final hurdle.

He cannot move in for another month and can't manage financially with the little money has for the remaining time in Santa Rosa, in addition to moving expenses. In the interest of full disclosure, here is the due diligence on our fundraising goal:

  • $2,090 - rent at the motel
  • $1,788 - storage fees until the end of July
  • $309 - car insurance
  • $500 - piano mover
  • $1,372 - movers, including truck
  • $4,320 - liquidating storage, including hauling fees

The total comes to $10,379. This does not include food or other day to day expenses. Any money made from liquidating his belongings in storage will go directly into a savings account for his future. Bill will be surviving on a little over $800 per month in social security, half of which is taken by the VA for his room and board.

In lieu of donating, some of the items available for sale will be guitars, cookware, including Le Creuset, camera equipment, and an extensive train collection. Please contact me if interested.

We’ve done everything we can because walking away wasn’t an option. Now we’re asking for help from the community to carry him the rest of the way.

If you’re able to give, share, or support in any way, it truly will make a difference.

Thank you,
Jodee and Christee
