Hello! My name is Amanda Olivas and I have created this GoFundMe on behalf of my Uncle Daniel. As a Navy veteran myself, I believe in the work he is doing for our community and want his voice to be heard, here is his story:
My name is Daniel Cano and I’m originally from El Paso, Texas. Service to our community and nation has always been very important to me. So, I enlisted in the U.S, Air Force right out of high school with the intensions of serving one term and returning home. As it turned out, it was much longer than one term. Today I’m a retired Air Force military service veteran with over 20 years active-duty time and 10 years of service as a government contractor and DoD civilian employee. In April 2021, I created Hero’s Haven, a property investment community housing model that is committed to the betterment of needy homeless veterans. I work in large part with local non-profits to find and place homeless veterans in our respectable homes. We offer a hand up and not a handout. Our vets deserve more. The Hero’s Haven origin story starts in Oct 2020 with a simple conversation I was having at the time with my long-time fellow veteran friend. I’ve known my friend since we were young Airman living in the dorms assigned to Torrejón, Air Base, Spain back in 1989. In that conversation he asked me a question that changed the direction of my life. He asked, if you could do anything, what would you do? I answered, if I could, I’d dedicate myself to giving back to our needy veteran community. At the time, I had no idea how, but I knew it was calling me. Flash forward to today. I resigned from my government job and sold most of my belongings to buy four homes in San Antonio and one in El Paso, Texas. I live in a 10x10 room and offer the rest of the spaces to our needy veterans. It’s communal living with shared kitchens and bathrooms. 11 rooms in San Antonio and 3 in El Paso. Local non-profits help pay for veteran expenses until they can get on their feet. Over the past three years Hero’s Haven has housed over 50 veterans. Most of our vets are back to stable lives and are productive members in our community. Some live on property and some leave to bigger and better housing. Hero’s Haven is blessed to be a part of their journey. “Through these doors walk the blessings of tomorrow”. After three years of funding Hero’s Haven on my own, I’ve come to the realization that we need outside financial support. Donations will be used for the upkeep of the properties, the creation of a website and social media platforms, and a much-needed emergency fund. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all your support. Together we are stronger. The mission continues….
