Jambo! Hello!
Frances and Jeremy here – for those who don’t know us, we are two American travelers spending a few weeks working alongside a local Tanzanian couple – Martha and Daniel – on various sustainable development projects.
Living at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Martha and Daniel are professional tour guides who run their own family business: KiliTanzania Pride Tours. Before 2020, their business was booming – they were operating tours to Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, and more, along with a full-scale hostel year-round. Unfortunately, tourism nosedived during the pandemic, and their income source dried up almost overnight. They struggled to survive as the industry they had both devoted their education and careers to was all but decimated.
Looking for a way to survive economically and diversify income sources for their family and community, Martha and Daniel channeled their time and energy into a new project: starting an organic farm to produce sustenance – and create jobs – for their family and others around them.
In 2021, only two of the five hectares of their farmland could be cleared due to a lack of financial resources. With the upcoming planting season approaching, there is a chance to scale this project to its full potential. With a fundraising boost to get the farm fully off the ground, and tourism beginning to rebound, they have the opportunity to climb out of the hole COVID created with diversified, sustainable sources of income.
This is an opportunity to give directly to a hardworking and generous local family that will share and create benefits for those around them. Funds donated will be used for:
- Renting a tractor
- Paying the workers who will help them clear the remaining three hectares. The harvest season in a few months will also provide jobs for families in the surrounding community.
- Buying seeds. They will grow peas and corn without artificial pesticides or fertilizers (instead, they use only natural fertilizer in the form of manure given by the Maasai pastoralist community).
Regardless of your donation amount, Martha, Daniel, and their 4-year-old son Ryan thank you from the bottom of their hearts for your help and also for believing in their project.
Asante sana! Thank you very much!
