She never asked for much, truthfully, she never really could. Things at home weren’t great; they never had been. There was always tension, always someone upset about something. Most nights, she wore her headphones just to drown out the yelling. She had gotten good at pretending everything was fine, but it was exhausting.
A junior in high school, she was just trying to keep up with classes and make it through each day. Without a car, everything was harder. Getting rides was a constant challenge, and walking to school in the cold or rain had become her normal.
Then she saw a red Fiat. It wasn’t new or flashy, but to her, it was perfect. It was $3,000, an amount that felt completely out of reach. Still, she couldn’t stop thinking about it. To most people, it was just an old used car. But to her, it meant freedom. It meant she wouldn’t have to rely on anyone else. It meant being able to leave when she needed to, go where she needed to, and finally feel like she had some control over her life.
She didn’t want anything fancy, just something she could call her own. That little red Fiat? To her, it was more than a car. It was hope.
