Creating a Memorial Bench for Joey: Honoring a Beautiful Spirit

I want to take a moment to share something deeply meaningful to me: my wish to purchase a memorial bench at Old Settlers Log Cabin Park in memory of my beloved son, Joey Vilardo. Joey’s life was tragically cut short after a courageous 23-day battle following an accident on Thanksgiving, and he passed away on December 17, 2023, just shy of his 28th birthday. As a triplet with profound autism, Joey had a unique, vibrant spirit that lit up our lives in ways words can hardly capture.

Joey lived at the Mabley Center, yet he always felt like a constant part of family in Dixon Il, where both his father and I have made connections in this small compassionate town, I maintain an apartment at Nachusa House Apartments, where Joey thrived among the warmth and support of our local family.

Dixon was Joey's true love. We chose Preston-Schilling Funeral Home for his service, as it held special significance for us. The proposed bench in the park is infused with meaning; it’s the very spot where I lovingly trimmed his hair, where he joyfully savored his McDonald’s Happy Meals. I can still picture him sitting on that bench, relishing every moment. Joey adored hardcover books and basketballs, leading to countless adventures in local resale shops, and he brought smiles to everyone he met, particularly the wonderful seniors at Nachusa. One of his greatest joys was picking up trash at Settlers Log Park, and afterward, we would stroll along the trail before sitting on the bench together, gazing at the river and soaking in the beauty around us.

To help share Joey’s joy and vibrant spirit, I’ve attached a heartwarming video and recent photos of him enjoying his time at the park, These memories are treasures that we hold dear. As we approach the anniversary of his passing, visiting the park brings us comfort and a sense of connection as we remember him. This bench would not only be a tribute to Joey’s love for Dixon but also a peaceful refuge for reflection. I envision adding a memorial plaque to celebrate his life, surrounded by colorful flowers that will enhance this cherished space.
