UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who donated and supported our cause! With your help, we were able to raise $2320, which allowed us to purchase food, cooking supplies, and dishware for 120 students. Additionally, we donated 20 million vnđ ($787) to the elementary school for repairs to the school's gate, bathrooms, and library. Finally, we allocated 5 million vnđ ($197) for families that were in need of the most financial assistance. Thank you everyone once again for assisting ethnic minority students in Gia Nghĩa, Đắk Nông, Việt Năm. You have helped change the lives of dozens of families here in our community, and we want to express our endless gratitude and appreciation. For those of you that donated $50 or more and requested a crochet toy, I will be contacting you shortly to ship your crochet toy to you!

My name is True Pham, and I’m a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Gia Nghĩa, Vietnam. Gia Nghĩa is the capital of Đắk Nông province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, and is one of the newest cities in Vietnam. In fact, the city celebrated its 20-year anniversary just last month. As a result of the city and the province’s infancy, we are also Vietnam’s poorest area.

At a local elementary school located just 10 minutes from us, the effects of this poverty are evident at the school as well as the families in the surrounding area. I, along with some of my English-major students, are working to raise $2000 for the elementary school and surrounding community.

We want to raise 800k vnđ, or about $32, to 50 of the families that are most in-need of assistance. This money will go a long way to ensure each family’s food security and support school-related expenses. The rest of the donation money will be donated to the school to fund repairs and renovations to the school’s gate and fence, as well as the bathrooms.

We traveled to the school to hear more about their needs and experiences. We were able to tour the school and meet some of the wonderful students and teachers. They were incredibly lively and grateful to hear about our project. After traveling to the school, we then visited the homes of two families whose children attend the school.

We learned about each of their personal situations that have led to various financial issues. One of the families has 5 children: the oldest child moved out and started his own family, while the second oldest child had to drop out of school in 8th grade due to financial difficulties. Both families lack a present father figure, and one of the families has the children live with their mother’s grandparents. They have received assistance from some organizations and departments in Gia Nghĩa to afford some services such as health insurance for the children, but they still face difficulties affording food for the whole family.

After speaking with the principal of the school, we also learned that the 2 families we visited were on the more fortunate end of the spectrum of families at the school—many families that we did not speak to struggle with food security and homelessness.

Genuinely any amount will help the school and the community tremendously—whatever you are willing to donate will be greatly appreciated. However, as a special thank you to those who donate at least $50, my students will make a customized crochet toy of your choice! These small toys can be anything you wish such as an elephant or a sunflower. Speaking from personal experience, I can promise you that these toys are incredibly adorable.

Please share this page with anyone you know that would be willing to donate and help out our wonderful community here in Gia Nghĩa, Vietnam. If you have any questions about Gia Nghĩa and the community here, how the money will be donated, or anything else about our project, please feel free to contact me. And special thank you to my wonderful students from 11AN for helping film and translate the video!

Xin cảm ơn nha!
