Six years ago, when their biological mother made the decision to move across the country to pursue her own life, my sister and brother-in-law stepped up without hesitation, opening their hearts and home fully to these young boys.

For the past six years, they have become their de facto parents, providing unwavering love, consistent support, and a safe environment where the boys could flourish. Now, out of the blue, their biological mother has instructed the boys to prepare for the younger sibling to move and live with her, and she is leaving the choice up to the older sibling, stay or go. He fears his 11-year-old brother will now be exposed to daily substance abuse within the mother's household, witness domestic violence between the mother and her boyfriend, be forced to accompany her to sports bars until all hours of the night, or be left alone for extended periods. This is the painful reality this amazing 17 year old lived through, and he is terrified of his younger brother having to endure the same trauma.

Since moving in with my sister and brother-in-law, both boys have blossomed. The younger boy, like his older brother, is now a top student. He actively participates in school clubs and events and passionately enjoys playing baseball. They are both thriving academically, socially, and emotionally – a direct result of the consistent love, support, and stability they have found in their current home.

For the past six years, my sister and brother-in-law have lived with the underlying fear that this day might come. Now that it is here, they are heartbroken, but resolute in their determination to fight for these boys. They have poured every ounce of their love, energy, and resources into providing these children with everything they need – emotionally, educationally, and financially. They are, without a doubt, their parents in every sense of the word.
