Support a blackwoman union organizer

April is a badass southern queer organizer who is courageously devoted to challenging systems of oppression and being a catalyst for progress that has benefited the community. When recently threatened with incarceration for her role in bringing about historic police accountability reforms to her home city of Lexington, KY, April fearlessly stated that a prosecutor couldn't stop her from organizing in jail. April has been organizing for decades, culminating in her being hired by Highlander. Now is the time for the community to stand in solidarity with April. With the holidays approaching, no one deserves to wonder how they will provide for their family, especially when April has done so much work to lead her community and Highlander in historic changes.

These historic and amazing wins include getting a ban on no knock warrants passed after the murder of Breonna Taylor, changes to the police contract that include an officer's disciplinary file being kept for their entire career instead of just five year, getting civilians appointed to the disciplinary review board, establishing a civilian governed process for complaints to be made against police without a police officer being the one taking the report, getting a Black woman elected to the County and Commonwealth Attorney's positions for the first time in history, replacing the racist incumbent who refused to drop charges against peaceful protesters. The wins don't stop there, April along with her community also just got the most diverse city council in Lexington history elected, helping three Black women win their races.

Please help us make sure that April and anyone else needing financial support while they challenge their termination are able to make it through the holidays without the added stress of not knowing how their bills will be paid. It is our goal to establish this community governed fund as a way to support Southern organizers who are unfairly targeted by gatekeepers and pushed out of the organizations that claim to be committed to justice and supporting Southern movement. We also hope to support grassroots organizations who are doing the real work of caring for and uplifting our folk while moving us closer to liberation from the white supremacist capitalist patriarchy.
