Our Story

Our friends—an asylum-seeking family who bravely escaped a dangerous regime in Nicaragua – now find themselves facing a familiar struggle. The safety and promise of a better life that the United States once held have given way to a nightmare in these troubled times. In June, Lester was abducted by ICE, leaving his wife, Dayana, two daughters (ages 16 and 9), and baby boy on their own, struggling to navigate an uncertain future.

UPDATE: Sadly Lester has been deported and is safe for now with trusted allies in Nicaragua. Our focus has changed to keeping Dayana safely here, and the retainer paid to Lester's attorney has been transferred over to Dayana's case/attorney.

Why We Are Raising Funds

Upon entering the U.S., Lester applied for asylum. For nearly 3 years, Lester and Dayana have worked, paid taxes, raised their children, and contributed to our community in many ways. Today, Lester sits in a dangerous, overcrowded prison in Louisiana. If he is forced to return to Nicaragua, he will be at risk of imprisonment, torture, or death. The legal costs to fight for this family's reunification and safety has become overwhelming. Our community rallied with care and generosity, yet the fight and the bills continue. With your support, we will seek legal assistance to reunite a family whose journey of love, courage, and faith was gutted by the same kind of dangerous masked men that they fled.
