This campaign was started by Diamond Shakir, a local realtor who believes that everyone deserves a roof over their head.

After seeing a woman sleeping at a bus stop on concrete with only a comforter for warmth — and remembering that both her sister and other family members have experienced homelessness — Diamond knew she couldn’t just walk past the problem. She couldn’t invite everyone into her home, but she could take action.

So, she partnered with a group of women leaders in the community to launch Citizens in Transition — and come up with the mission to provide 100 Mobile Backpack Shelters for people experiencing homelessness in the charlotte metro area

Each shelter includes a backpack, tent, tarp, sleeping pad, and emergency blanket — simple essentials that bring warmth, safety, and dignity.

Together, we can make sure no one sleeps on concrete this winter.
