We need your help to support a new mural in Sunset Park!

Background:
25 years ago, in 2001, local residents created the Sunset Park Unity Mural on the corner of 54th Street and 5th Avenue. Local organizations and the arts nonprofit Groundswell helped bring this mural to life, on a wall that had already hosted two previous murals, the first one painted in the early 80s and second one in the early 90s.

Now:
After years of fading and graffiti, it is time to paint a new mural! We need your support to make it happen - Funds will go towards supplies, the artist and production team, and a community paint day in the spring of 2026.

Mural Development:
The new mural builds on the long tradition at this location, celebrating the people, landmarks, and rich day-to-day life in Sunset Park. To develop the design, neighbors went door-to-door with a multilingual survey, asking questions to bring the mural to life: "What do you like about 54th Street? What do you like about Sunset Park? What images come to mind?"

Neighbors also reviewed several options of potential muralists' portfolios and styles, and selected Danielle Maistron in a vote. Danielle was born and raised in Brooklyn, and has created some of the most beloved murals in Brooklyn. Danielle created several iterations of a mural design, incorporating input and feedback. She shared the final design in January 2026, and it can be seen above.

Mural Today:
Sunset Park has a rich history as a neighborhood of immigrants. The final mural design showcases the vibrancy of our community. It features flowers that carry meaning for the diverse people that call Sunset Park home. It highlights important landmarks and scenes across the neighborhood, including the designated "landmark" status for the 54th street block. And two figures are in movement, capturing feelings of hope and possibility and looking towards the future.

How You Can Help:
Donations to date have been used to host community design sessions and hire a professional muralist. But we need your support to bring this mural to life. Painting is expected to start in early March 2026 and be completed by May 2026, so we are hoping to reach our goal before then.

All donations are tax deductible.

Who Is Involved
Huge thanks to our fiscal sponsor, the Sunset Park Business Improvement District. To Citibank for generously restoring the wall surface to host the new mural. Thank you to the residents of 54th Street for taking leadership on this project. Thank you to Giter&_ providing production support and Danielle Maistron, the muralist.

We look forward to sharing our new mural with you!
