When SNAP benefits were suspended in November, many families in our community suddenly faced new challenges putting food on the table. As the owner of Don's Daughter Donna's Barber Shop, along with members of the Magnolia Community Support Group, we saw the impact this had on families in our area and began raising money to purchase grocery gift cards for families in the three elementary schools nearby, Lawton, Blaine and Magnolia. To date, thanks to our generous families and friends we have raised $3,500! The need is especially urgent during school breaks when children lose access to free breakfast and lunch programs.
This summer, we’re working to provide basic breakfast, lunch and snack food items—non-perishable staples that can help families get through the months when school is out. If we’re able to raise enough, we’ll also continue offering grocery gift cards, giving families the flexibility to choose what works best for them. Every dollar raised goes directly to supporting these families, ensuring that no child goes hungry while school is out.
We are supporting 39 families, 53 being students at these schools! We will be trying to do weekly grocery pick ups for these families but we cannot do it without your help!
With the state of our country right now, it’s hard to know what difference we can make. It can feel overwhelming. My dad always told me to take care of my little square, and this is what I can do to help my community and take care of my square. I invite you to join me in making a real impact for our neighbors. Your support means the world to these families, and together, we can make sure every child has enough to eat this summer.
